Mich. tribe opposing land swap

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2001 The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa is opposing a land transfer between a private developer and the state of Michigan. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants to swap some public land on South Fox Island for property owned by David Johnson. Johnson at one time wanted to develop the island into a resort but wants to preserve it now, he said. The tribe, however, opposes the deal because it has outstanding land claims. The tribe also says Johnson is getting the best land while the state is stuck with the worst. Environmental groups and sporting groups are also fighting the transfer. Congress has blocked any swap until fiscal year 2003 because the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service owned the island before it was handed over to the sate. A condition of the transfer was that the agencies would have to approve any swaps. Get the Story:
