Democrats present own energy plan

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2001 Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) on Wednesday introduced a national energy policy drafted by Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. As expected, the legislative package doesn't include drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Democrats in the Senate have opposed opening the refuge to oil and gas development and have blocked Republican attempts to approve drilling provisions the House agreed to this summer. Despite the no-drilling stance, the bill got mixed reviews from environmental groups. It also got negative reviews from Republicans, who said it wasn't any different from a Democratic proposal released earlier this year. Debate on the bill is scheduled next year. Get the Story:
