Ex-mayor vows petroglyph protection

MONDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2001 Ex-Albuquerque mayor Jim Baca said he will "stand in front of a bulldozer" to protect the Petroglyph National Monument in New Mexico, The Albuquerque Journal reported. Baca has long opposed plans to extend a highway through the monument, a project authorized by a federal law signed by former President Bill Clinton. The new mayor, Martin Chavez, supports the extension. The monument is considered sacred to a number of tribes in the state. Sandia Pueblo is considering a lawsuit if Chavez moves forward with the road. Chavez was inaugurated on Friday. Get the Story:
