Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico has temaed up with a coalition of environmental groups to fight approval of a mine near a sacred lake.

The tribe, the Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Citizens Coal Council and the Water Information Network all oppose a coal mine operation that would be located about 12 miles away from Zuni Salt Lake. The Pueblo, the coliation and area tribes say the operation will dry up the lake.

Arizona-based Salt River Project wants to mine coal for power consumers in Phoenix.
