WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2001

A coalition of 10 animal welfare and conservation groups has told the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the black-tailed prairie under the Endangered Species Act.

The groups say problems are leading to the depletion of the dog. Therefore it should be listed as threatened, they said.

Various states and tribes are coming up with plans to manage prairie dogs.
