MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2001 The Homestake Mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota is closing this Friday after more than one hundred years of operation. Gold had been taken from the mine since 1876. The mine has been losing money in recent years, so it was decided to close it down. The mine may be turned into an underground laboratory to study neutrinos. Congress has to make a final recommendation and the Sioux Falls Argus Leader in an editorial calls on Congress, the state and the company to work together and open the lab. Get the Story:
