Report criticizes salmon efforts

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2001 Federal, state and tribal officials in the Pacific Northwest aren't properly controlling how much fish is being taken from the Columbia River basin, an independent assessment has concluded. In a report to the federal agency that oversees endangered species protections, the Salmon Recovery Science Review Panel criticizes various officials for not providing a scientific basis in how they determine how much salmon and steelhead can be fished. The panel says treaty rights issues should be examined to ensure the species aren't being over-fished. The report was provided to the National Marine Fisheries Service. Environmentalists say it proves the government isn't protecting the fish well enough. Get the Story:
