TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2001

A committee of the National Academy of Sciences today will hold a hearing to consider differing opinions of the government's decision to deny water to farmers in the Klamath River basin on the Oregon-California border.

The Department of Interior earlier this year denied the water to protect the environment and uphold trust responsibilities to tribes in the region. The farmers then launched a number of protests.

In response, Secretary Gale Norton decided to have the entire decision reviewed by the NAS committee. After today's hearing, the committee will meet on Wednesday and Thursday to prepare an interim report due at the end of January.

A final report is due in a year and one-half.
