A Montana Shooting Sports Association has filed suit in federal court against the Bureau of Land Management over the shooting of prairie dogs on federal land.

The BLM, an agency of the Department of Interior, has restricted shooting in order to help restore the population of black-footed ferret, the most endangered mammal in North America. The ferret feasts solely on the prairie dog.

The group says the BLM imposed the restrictions without public input.

Programs to restore the ferret and the prairie dog have been started on various reservations in the Plains.
