The Yakama Nation of Washington and a European company are trying to obtain hydropower licenses to two dams near a nuclear reservation.

The partnership between the tribe and PacifiCorp began last year. They are hoping to gain control of the Priest Rapids and Wanapum dams from the Grant County Public Utility District.

The dams are located on land ceded by the tribe in 1855 and which later became the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. The tribe has a treaty-protected right to have a role in the management of fish and wildlife in the ceded area.
