Forest proposal raises concern

Some environmentalists are worried about new regulations that will give local Forest Service managers more control over what happens on federal land.

The proposal will allow managers to go through with projects without seeking public comment or conducting an environmental analysis. It was designed to let small projects proceed without a lengthy review.

But some environmentalists say it will also allow certain road building, mining projects and other developments to occur without any public say.

In related forestry news, the Senate on Wednesday confirmed timber lobbyist Mark Rey as undersecretary for natural resources and the environment at the Department of Agriculture.
