Alaska subsistence panel meets
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2001

A panel of Alaska state leaders met on Monday to consider a constitutional amendment over subsistence rights.

No clear action was reported by the panel, which was convened by Gov. Tony Knowles in order to resolve the conflict between the state's constitution and federal law. Urban hunters and sports fishermen, however, said they want to ensure their access to hunting.

The federal government has taken over most of the waterways in the state to uphold trust responsibilities to Alaska Natives.
