Democrats delaying cleanup bill

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2001

Democrats in the House are delaying action on a bill to clean up toxic sites throughout the country over concerns about federal labor laws.

The Democrats want to be assured the jobs created by a $1 billion brownfields bill will be eligible for high wages under the Davis-Bacon Act. They are waiting for a letter from the Bush administration before they support the bill.

The bill, which passed the Senate in April, provides $200 million over five years to clean up industrial sites that have been abandoned. A number of sites are located on or near reservations and tribal land.
