FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2001

Two animal rights groups on Thursday filed suit against the Bureau of Land Management to prevent the roundup and auction of 21,000 wild horses from federal lands.

The roundup is scheduled to take place this fall. The BLM says it keeps the horse population, which has been growing, under control.

The Fund for Animals and Animal Legal Defense Fund say the removal of such a large number of horses could hurt the herds by leading to inbreeding. The groups also say all the horses won't be adopted.
