Norton praises Ariz. forest experiment

THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2001 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Wednesday praised an experimental forest in Arizona as a means of preventing wildfires. The Fort Valley Experimental Forest is a project between the government and private groups. The project thins out trees in a 1,900-acre section of the Coconino National Forest. Thinning, said Norton, keeps the forest healthy and protects it from fires. Environmentalists protested Norton's visit to the forest, saying the project is a guise for logging. Get the Story:
