Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Wednesday praised an experimental forest in Arizona as a means of preventing wildfires.

The Fort Valley Experimental Forest is a project between the government and private groups. The project thins out trees in a 1,900-acre section of the Coconino National Forest.

Thinning, said Norton, keeps the forest healthy and protects it from fires.

Environmentalists protested Norton's visit to the forest, saying the project is a guise for logging.
