EPA wants clean air policy scaled back

In response to lobbying by a number of high-profile Republicans, the Environmental Protection Agency has decided it should scale back a strict Clinton-era policy on emissions from power plants.

Former Montana Governor Marc Racicot and the wife of Solicitor General Ted Olson were among those who pushed the Bush adminstration on the issue. They said aging, coal-fired power plants were subject to overly stringent requirements to reduce their emissions.

The EPA will suggest to President Bush adminstrative or legislative changes to the program, which was implemented under the Clean Air Act.
