TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2001

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes on the Flathead Reservation in Montana will be working with property owners to discuss low water levels in Flathead Lake.

The lake is seeing levels at a 78-year low. Low snowpack from feeder streams is contributing, said a tribal official.

The tribe and the federal government have agreed on water levels on the lake.

A portion of the lake lies within reservation boundaries. During the 1970s, one of President Bush's confirmed federal judges fought the tribes' right to regulate non-Indian use of the lake but a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the tribes.
