MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2001 Japanese whaling crews are returning to Tokyo after a controversial hunt billed as a scientific expedition. According to officials, 158 whales were killed, including 50 Bryde's whales and eight sperm whales. The rest were minke whales. The international community, including the United States, has criticized Japan for the hunt, saying it is a guise for commercial whaling.
