Fighting fires in the West may cost the federal government more than $1 billion, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The cost of fighting and paying for the damage of fires like the Cerro Grand blaze in New Mexico as well as a great number still burning in Montana may require the government to dip into the treasury.
