Tribal, state and federal officials along with private groups met in Montana this week for a two-day session on black-tailed prairie dog protection.

Tribes are developing their own management plans, said Shaun Grassel, chair of the Inter-Tribal Prairie Ecosystem Restoration Council. The council represents about 10 tribes.

The prairie dog could be listed as threatened because of declining numbers. A number of other species, including the rare black-footed ferret, depend on it.
