Scientists predicted he would die without their intervention. But an endangered right whale caught in fishing line for more than two months has returned to United States waters.

The whale, one of 300 known in the world, is off the coast of Massachusetts, said the National Marine Fisheries Service. Another attempt to rescue him is under consideration.

Named Churchill, he has an infection from the fishing line that appears to have worsened.
