Retiring scientist tapped Eskimo knowledge

MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 2001 A scientist who spent more than two decades with Inupiat Eskimos to learn about the bowhead whale has retired from his job. As senior scientist with the North Slope Borough's Wildlife Management Department, Tom Albert conducted the first whale-counting project. At the time, little was known about the numbers and migration of the whale. But with the help of Inupiat hunters and elders, Albert was able to conduct the study. Get the Story:
