FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001 The Coeur d'Alene Tribe of Idaho is opposing a proposed settlement to clean up decades of historical mining but wants to work with the United States and a mining company to come to an agreement. Hecla Mining Co. this week said it is willing to pay at least $138 million over 30 years to clean up mining in the Coeur d'Alene Basin and some additional sites. The settlement came as a result of a lawsuit filed by the United States and the tribe. The tribe is concerned about where the money will be spent. Chairman Ernie Stensgar says money should be dedicated to the basin sites, not the outside ones. The case was the largest Superfund cleanup ever to go to trial. Get the Story:
