THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2001 Alaska Natives in the southcentral region of Alaska have won a round in their long-running dispute to have their subsistence rights recognized. Superior Court Judge Mark Rindner has ruled that state regulators unfairly dismissed the subsistence claims of the Kenaitze Tribe and other villages. The judge said the Boards of Fisheries and Gam should not have generalized about the region when dismissing the claims. Under existing state and federal law, Alaska Natives would be otherwise denied subsistence rights. State regulators now believe they can rewrite the rules to address the villagers but the state might appeal Rindner's ruling. Get the Story:
