EPA acts on reservation contamination

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2001 The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered a company to stop an old oil well from leaking pollutants into the drinking supply on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana. Within 90 days, Pioneer Natural Resources USA Inc. has to stop leaking of the contaminants or face $15,000 a day in fines. High levels benzene -- which can cause cancer -- and other chemicals have been found in the reservation water supply. Get the Story:
