THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 In a guest editorial today in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Washington Congressman Jim McDermott says legislation he recently introduced won't result in the breaching of four federally operated dams on the Snake River. Instead, he says it will only authorize a study to consider whether breaching is an option in order to save dwindling runs of salmon and protect treaty rights. If it is feasible to breach the dams, then he says Congress would have to consider other legislation. Various media reports have cited that McDermott's bill would result in breaching of the dams.
