THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 By a vote of 269 to 160, the House on Wednesday rejected an amendment that would have required higher fuel efficiency standards for sports utility vehicles. Opponents said the amendment would force automobile manufacturers to develop less safe vehicles. Instead, the bill approved early this morning leaves open the exact miles per gallon (mpg) standard for sports utility vehicles, mini-vans and light trucks, although it requires the industry to produce cars that save 5 billion gallons of oil between 2004 and 2010.
