Water compact to be complex
AUGUST 14, 2000

A water rights compact between the state of Montana and the tribes on the Fort Belknap Reservation is expected to be complex, as it involves the Milk River, several irrigation districts, the Canadian border, and potentially the rights of the Blackfeet Nation.

State negotiators are looking to come to a compact by next year. It would have to be approved by the state, Congress, and the tribes.

A water compact with the Crow Tribe has apparently been abandoned by the tribe once the new administration took place in July.
