AUGUST 11, 2000

Fire mangers in the Rocky Mountain region will give up fighting some of the numerous fires that have plagued the west in the worst fire season in 50 years.

Officials said there are no more crews left to fight all the fires. Crews from Mexico, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia are among many who have been called to battle.

The Pony Fire affecting the Mesa Verde National Park and the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in southwestern Colorado is 53 percent contained. The fire is expected to be 100 percent contained by tonight.

The fire has damaged some of the park's cliff dwellings.
