Pueblo wants to regulate hunting

JULY 6, 2000

The Pueblo of Sandia has proposed to regulate hunting of tribal members on state land, but the New Mexico Game Commission isn't too excited about the plan.

The Pueblo would only regulate the hunting season for tribal members on the west face of the Sandia Mountains. Tribal members would not buy a state hunting license and would abide by rules based on the religious calendar of the tribe.

The Pueblo has an outstanding land claim on the mountain. A federal judge in 1988 awarded the tribe 10,000 acres of land on the west face, which the government appealed.

The tribe is currently negotiating a settlement with the federal government, but some local and state opposition appears to have held up completion of an agreement.

The tribe has proposed land title remain with the government, but that the land be restricted from future development including mineral or timber production, grazing, or gaming.

The settlement would also give tribal members unrestricted access to the land.
