Tribes want national forest

JULY 31, 2000 The Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians are seeking control of 95,000 acres of the Siuslaw National Forest, from which the Oregon-based tribes hope to generate revenue from thinning trees. The tribes are asking the city of Coos Bay to support their plan. If the plan goes through, the land would be held in trust for the tribes. They would manage it through the Northwest Forest Plan and the Governor's Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. Get the Story:
