Elder sees signs of distress

JULY 28, 2000

An elder of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe of Colorado says he see signs of distress over recent happenings in the state, including the designation of a Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and the Mesa Verde National Park fire.

Terry Knight, the spiritual leader of the tribe, says the new monument will only create more study on archaeological sites that should be left alone. He said problems in returning cultural property to tribes through the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act are causing stress among Native ancestors.

He hopes that Pueblo tribes will conduct a ceremony to restore harmony to Mesa Verde once the fire is extinguished.
