Cook Inlet Region Inc., an Alaska Native corporation chartered under federal law, on Thursday settled a 26-year dispute over lands around the the Russian River.

Under the agreement signed with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Forest Service, CIRI will relinquish claims to 2,000 acres of land in prime fishing grounds where the Russian and Kenai rivers meet. CIRI will get title to about 62 acres of land in the area, along with title to 502 acres of archaeological resources.

CIRI had sought to select lands in the area under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The area contains vast historical and archaeological resources and has been used as far back as 8,000 years ago.

The deal has to be finalized through legislation.
