Tribe cleaning up canyon

TUESDAY, JULY 24, 2001

A joint project of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of California and the Bureau of Land Management is aimed at cleaning up Indian Canyons by removing damaging grass that is overtaking native vegetation.

The effort may take years but getting rid of the grass and the tamarisk, a tree, will help restore water to the area.

Sandia Pueblo of New Mexico has a similar project to restore a stretch of land along the Rio Grande by getting rid of non-native species.
