After a year of work, Sandia Pueblo has finished clearing and restoring 20 acres of land along the Rio Grande to its natural state but the job is not yet completed.

In addition to 40 more acres, the Pueblo will have to keep restoring the land in order to have an effect on the river ecosystem. The land has been overrun with non-Native species and it will probably take four years to rid the area completely of trees like the salt cedar and russian olive.

The goal is to restore a cottonwood forest. The Pueblo received $200,000 to clear the 20 acres and has receved another $600,000 to start on the 40 acres.
