JULY 20, 2000

Radioactive runoff has been discovered in Los Alamos Canyon due to recent thunderstorms in the area ravaged by the Cerro Grande fire.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory reported higher-than-average levels of radiation above the facility.

The Pueblos of Cochiti, Jemez, San Ildefonso, and Santa Clara are particularly worried about runoff onto their land. Heavy rains and the threat of flooding have raised concerns of contamination.

San Ildefonso and Santa Clara were most affected by the recent Cerro Grande fire. President Clinton recently signed the Cerro Grande Fire Assistance Act into law, which provides for funds to the pueblos to address environmental concerns caused by the blaze.
