Secretary of Interior Gale Norton promoted the President's national energy policy on a visit to South Dakota on Monday, addressing controversial issues like drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Norton added a pitch for renewable and alternative energy sources such as wind power and ethanol. The state has three wind energy projects in development and three ethanol plants in operation with six more in the planning stages.

Norton's visit was part of larger White House initiative to promote President Bush's policy. Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Whitman all participated in town halls and meetings to push a plan which has seen setbacks in Congress.

Norton later visited the Tiospa Zina Tribal School on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation.
