Peruvian fight against mine is deadly

FRIDAY, JULY 13, 2001 A Peruvian activist who was the leading the fight against a mining operations proposed by a Candian company was killed on March 31, shot down by masked gunman. Supporters suggest Manhattan Minerals Corp. is connected to the killing. A company official denied being involved. The company wants to start gold, copper and other mines in northern Peru near the Ecuador border. Farmers are opposed because it would displace them from fertile farmlands. Get the Story:
