Kickapoo search for water
JUNE 9, 2000

The Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas continues its search for water. Recently, 3 potential water sites have been found on the reservation.

The tribe has faced drought conditions over the recent weeks, going so far as to declare a state of emergency and asking President Clinton to do the same. High heat and lack of rain led the tribe to declare the emergency, calling on tribal members to suspend certain water usage in order to conserve water.

The state has defended its policies although they have no long term drought plan. The tribe has been pushing for a long term solution to their recurring problems, including a renewed call for the Pikitanoi Water Project, which could prevent future problems.
