Tribe delays wild horses

JUNE 9, 2000

Complaints by the Ute Tribe of Utah and the Uintah County have delayed the release of about 80 mustang horses into the wilds of Book Cliffs.

After a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) meeting on Thursday with the Ute Tribal Business Committee and county officials, both groups took action including a letter and phone campaign to top officials in the BLM, urging them to delay the release, which was expected at dawn today.

The county, ranchers, and the tribe may sue, according to Uintah County Commission Chairman Herb Snyder. The county and the tribes have objected to the horses' release, citing grazing concerns.
