Bush to take on global warming

JUNE 6, 2001

President Bush on Tuesday met with advisers in advance of preparing his own alternative to the 1997 Kyoto global warming treaty the international community criticized him for abandoning.

Bush will announce his proposal next week at a meeting with European leaders. He will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Clinton administration signed the treaty which calls on industrialized nations to reduce emissions which are believed to contribute to global warming. The Senate, however, refused to ratify it unless it contained provisions affecting developing countries.

At the same time, Senators said they voted against it not to withdraw the US from global warming talks but to keep working on an agreement.
