JUNE 5, 2001

Tribal leaders will join Representative Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) in Washington, DC, on Wednesday to protest development of a sacred site in Montana.

The Bureau of Land Management has approved an exploratory oil well at Weatherman's Draw. A number of tribes in Montana and beyond consider it sacred and use it for ceremonies.

The work is being done by the Anschutz Exploration Corp., whose CEO Phil Anschutz contributed $300,000 to President Bush and the Republican party. Although the decision to approve was made after Bush's inauguration, it was in the works for at least a year.

Rahall is the ranking Democrat on the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues.
