JUNE 30, 2000

Non-Indian fisherman at Lake Mille Lacs are restricted by a federal court decision which imposes limits on the walleye catch. The Ojibwe band has a quota of 70,000 pounds on the lake and took in 45,000 pounds this spring by net and spear.

Non-Indian fisherman have exceeed their quota for the past two years and Department of Naural Resources says that will not happen this yea.

An 1837 treaty with the Ojibwe bands guarantees their right to fish off reservation. In 1999, the Mille Lacs won a Supreme Court decision in favor of their rights.
