Subsistence decision overturned

JUNE 29, 2001

In a blow to a decade-long fight by the Kenaitze Tribe of Alaska, the Federal Subsistence Board on Thursday overturned its decision to consider the entire Kenai Peninsula rural for subsistence purposes.

Chairwoman Rosalie Tepp said the tribe will probably go to court to fight the decision. The Board a year ago had decided in favor of the tribe's 1998 petition but sports fishermen -- who would have had less priority under a subsistence ruling -- appealed.
