Tribe awaiting subsistence ruling

JUNE 28, 2001

The Kenaitze Tribe of Alaska is one of several groups hoping the Federal Subsistence Board upholds a decision to declare the entire Kenai Peninsula rural.

The designation would give the tribe and local residents priority on federal lands and waters. This would allow for longer hunting seasons, bigger catch limits and use of traditional hunting and trapping methods.

The board last year voted to designate the Kenai rural in response to a petition by the tribe made in 1998. The decision being appealed. A meeting tonight in Anchorage will address the issue.

The Board is part of US Fish and Wildlife, an agency of the Department of Interior.
