Pueblo challenging mine operation

JUNE 22, 2001

Picuris Pueblo of northern New Mexico was back in state court on Thursday to challenge a permit to a mine located on ancestral tribal land.

The state in 1999 approved a 20-year expansion of an 80-acre mine, one of the nation's largest mica operations. The Pueblo challenged the permit but was thrown out of court because a state district judge said the tribe acted too late.

The mine has left waste on a site where potters have gathered clay for pottery. The tribe believes the mine area still belongs to the Pueblo.
