Makah Chairman: Whale 'absolutely delicious'

JUNE 20, 2001

The Makah Nation of Washington last week made use of a beached gray whale which washed up on the shores of Olympic National Park, distributing the meat to tribal members.

Chairman Greig Arnold is reported as saying: "It was absolutely delicious. I had it as a roast."

The Makah Nation is the only tribe with a treaty-guaranteed right to hunt whale. A new management plan is under consideration by the federal government after an appeals court last year ruled an environmental studies was not completed before the whale hunt was approved.
