Fire burns in sacred peaks
JUNE 14, 2001

More than 700 firefighters are battling a blaze in the San Francisco Peaks of northern Arizona, mountains considered sacred to a number of tribes in the Southwest.

Called the Leroux fire, the 1,200-acre blaze was started by an abandoned campfire.

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona and the Navajo Nation are among the tribes who consider the peaks sacred.
