JUNE 14, 2001

US Navy officials on Wednesday told The Washington Post that bombing exercises over the Puerto Rican island of Vieques will end in 2003.

Secretary Gordon R. England will announce plans to end bombing as early as today, officials told The Post. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld will appoint a panel to consider an alternative for the site, which has served as training and target practice for 60 years.

Residents of Puerto Rico have complained about the negative environmental and health impacts bombing has had on the island. Lawsuits to force the government to stop the exercises, however, have failed.

The New York Times reports that the story was covered by television news networks yesterday evening.
