Parasite killing Alaska salmon

MAY 7, 2001

A fish pathologist at the University of Washington says that king salmon in the upper Yukon River in Alaska are growing sick from a deadly parasite.

As a result, the fish smell odd and their flesh almost inedible. When cooked, the ichthyophonus parasite poses no harm to humans but the taste is off-putting for regular consumers of the fish.

Subsistence and commercial fisherman have been noticing the change in the salmon for several years. The problem begin to intensify recently.
